What is a Licensed Veterinary Technician?

A licensed veterinary technician (LVT) is a person who has graduated from a veterinary technology program accredited or approved by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) of the American Veterinary Medical Association, or other accrediting agency approved by the Board, or a person who has received equivalent training as set forth in the rules of the Board.

What responsibilities do veterinary technicians have?

Many of the responsibilities carried out by a licensed veterinary technician include the same responsibilities of credentialed human nurses and other health care professionals. These include:

  • Obtaining and recording patient case histories
  • Collecting specimens and performing lab procedures, including interpreting urine results, fecal samples, blood samples & taking blood, etc.
  • Preparing animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery
  • Taking radiographs of animals
  • Assisting in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures
  • Advising and educating owners
  • Performing dental cleanings
  • Assisting the doctor in exam rooms

Education/Degrees: AAS in Veterinary Technology from Suny Delhi (5/82), NYS License since 6/82, NYSAT member, numerous continuing education certificates ranging from nutrition, dental care, radiology, anesthesiology & laboratory procedures.

Professional Interests: Dentistry, NO EYES OR SNAKES!!

Reason for choosing this field: I have always loved animals since I was a child-wanting to help both animals & owners form that “special” bond.

What do you like most about South Towne and/or your favorite parts of the day: Our clients are extended family; many I’ve watched grow over the years.  I enjoy helping our clients provide the best care/medicine you can give them.  I’ve also watched technology change over the years.  Best part of my day is to see a child smile when they get their pet back after a stay with us!

Hobbies/interests/family/pets: Camping, NASCAR racing, travel, horseback riding, quilting & baking cookies!  I have 2 sons (Ben & Andrew), a Standard Dachshund dog Lena who is 8 years old, a TB Mare horse that is 31 years young, 2 cats; Houdini 18 years and Digit 9 years, 2 Chinchillas, 1 bird and a 50 gallon tank of fish!  In my free time, if I’m not quilting or baking cookies for the race team, I can be found at the barn, camping or traveling.
